Author Spotlight -- The Lia-Ria Adventure Series

As we continue to grow and live out our mission (to get books into the hands of children), we decided to take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about the authors behind the book of the month!
This month we spotlight Jodi Fiore and her amazing books; The Lia-Ria Adventure Series.  I met Jodi while at a fall festival and she was busy doing what she loves, sharing her gift of writing with others. Her passion for writing was immediately felt by both myself and my son!  We enjoyed reading her book and decided to share it with other children.  Please enjoy this short interview with Jodi:

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I have always loved writing stories. I remember being a little girl and an elderly neighbor wrote and illustrated a story for me. Ironically it was about a turkey, but I remember feeling so impressed and inspired by her!

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

Illustrating! I do enjoy writing but my favorite part of the process is when I feel as though the writing portion is complete and I can start illustrating. I actually find the illustrating part relaxing and enjoyable.

How long does it take you to complete a book?

From start to finish, usually at least a year, sometimes a year and a half. Sometimes even longer. I have learned that it is better to take my time rather than rush to get the story ‘done.’

How do you balance work when you're writing?

I write and illustrate my stories at night and on weekends. I find that my young students inspire me to create many of my stories.

How many books have you written?

I have written 4 stories and am currently working on my 5th book. Here are the titles:

  • Lia-Ria and the Lockdown Drill
  • Lia-Ria Meets the Angels
  • Lia-Ria and the Ostrich Feathers
  • Lia-Ria and the Old Timers

Why do you write children's books?

As a Kindergarten teacher, I often see young children feel anxious or confused about certain social situations. In my books, I try my best to explain these situations in a way that makes it easier for children to understand. My book writing career started in 2010 with my Lia-Ria and the Lockdown Drill story. Sadly, this story is still needed today to help prepare little ones for this drill. I wish I never had to write a story about lock downs. It is my hope that my book can help at least one child, one classroom, or one school safe!

What do you hope for the children who read your books?

I hope they feel less anxious about our world and feel inspired to help their friends as well.

What is your favorite book of all time?

Too many to decide! I love reading books myself. I will say that my current favorite children’s book author and illustrator (beside myself ha-ha) is Mo Willems. I enjoy his wit and I love hearing my students giggle when I read his stories in my classroom.

I truly enjoyed the answers to these questions.  I love learning about others and what inspires them! I extremely love a good children's book that we can enjoy as a family!  Thank you, Jodi, for sharing!
